It has been a tradition for many years that Apple has added various accessories to its iPhones to make it easier for buyers to get started with their smartphone. This scope of delivery should now change again with the upcoming iPhone 12.
iPhone 12 without EarPods insert: The (wireless) future belongs to AirPods
While Apple is known to have said goodbye to the classic 3.5 mm jack connection with the iPhone 7, and at the same time included the EarPods smartphone with a Lightning port and a small adapter, the wired headphones are now clearly on the brink. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF International Securities reports aloud MacRumors and 9to5Mac in a current report to its investors that Apple will delete the insert of the EarPods from the iPhone 12. The free headphones would be a thing of the past from the end of the year.
Instead, the analyst expects that Apple is planning very attractive offers for the completely wireless AirPods for the coming Christmas quarter. These should serve as a replacement for the EarPods. Apple’s EarPods with Lightning Connector currently officially cost 29 euros, while AirPods start at 179 euros. However, the analyst does not give specific details of how Apple’s Christmas marketing could look.
With the elimination of the EarPods, the demand for the AirPods and AirPods Pro should increase. The Corona crisis is currently causing sales in the current quarter to be around 29 percent lower than in the same quarter of the previous year. However, this setback is only intended to be temporary. The analyst predicts rising numbers for the following quarters. As a result, Kuo corrected its expected sales in 2020 from 80 to 90 million to now 93.8 million copies.
Apple’s AirPods Pro compared to the competition:
Kuo: No AirPods updates in 2020
Ming-Chi Kuo also assumes that we won’t see any updated AirPods or AirPods Pro this year. Jon Prosser, on the other hand, said that the third generation of AirPods is in the starting blocks and could be introduced at any time. In recent months there have been various reports about new headphones from Apple.
Aside from the well-known AirPods and AirPods Pro, an over-ear model, the AirPods Studio, and AirPods X – based on the BeatsX – are to be released. The latter has repeatedly caused confusion in the past weeks and months, as there has been repeated talk of “AirPods Pro Lite”, which could refer to the AirPods X. Both AirPods Studio and AirPods X / AirPods Pro Lite should be presented this year, according to Prosser.
These AirPods Pro are slightly more exclusive than Apple’s standard offering:
Prosser assumes that Apple wants to say goodbye to the Beats brand in the long term. The AirPods X could be launched in September or October. An October date is more likely, as Apple plans to postpone the iPhone 12 launch by a month, according to Jon Prosser’s recent reports. This also sounds consistent with the WWDC taking place later this year. A September event would otherwise mean a shorter beta phase for the new operating systems, such as iOS 14.
